Frequently Asked Questions
Why is there a Wait Time?
There is a wait time because many of our products (mainly knife sheaths) are Made to Order. Due to the vast number of available sheath options, we are not able to stock any sheaths. We build sheaths for a large number of different knives, in 3 colors, Left and Right Hand, and with many different accessory options. So instead of stocking sheaths that meet only some of your specifications, and not all of them, we let you decide exactly what you want built into your sheath.
When your order and payment are submitted, your order is added to our production schedule. We operate on a first come first serve basis, so the schedule is essentially the waiting list of customers that precede your order.
This wait time is an approximate period of time from the date of your order, to the day your order will be shipped out. We do our best to give you an accurate wait time, however please realize that this is an estimate. Our goal is to provide you with an exceptional product, in a reasonable time frame. We will not rush an order just to get it out the door. If the product does not meet our standards, then it will not leave our shop until it does. We understand that it may be difficult to wait this time period for your order, but we are certain that you will find it was worth the wait.
Why does it take "X" weeks to build my order?
It doesn't, most sheaths only take a couple hours to build. From start to finish, the process happens over the course of two days, which accounts for the time the order is processed in a small sheath batch, and the dry times for various steps in the process. Your order is on a backlog of many customers preceding your order. We are a small shop, and therefore have a small production capacity, which means we can have a large backlog when we get busy.
When am I charged for my order?
Your payment is charged at the time of your order.
What are your payment options?
We accept Credit Cards, and PayPal.
Do you do phone orders?
We do not take phone orders. All orders needs to be placed online.
Do you guys do custom orders?
We no longer accept custom orders. This is due to the length of time we take to design a sheath. We put a lot of time and effort into design each one of our sheaths, even the simple ones. Each sheath model can take hours to draft a template, followed by multiple prototypes to finalize. There are also some designs that require special jigs and tooling in order to manufacture certain parts. The amount of time involved with designing and building a sheath is just not worth it for "one-off" custom orders.
Why are do some of the sheath pictures not have the knife in them?
This is because we do not have pictures available for every sheath for every knife. These pictures are an accurate depiction of what the actual sheath will look like, and serve as a placeholder until we have the actual sheath pictures for that particular knife. If the sheath you see in the picture has double stitching, than your sheath will have double stitching, and so on and so forth. A particular sheath model will have the same features for every knife, but the main "body" of the sheath will be built around the specific knife it is intended for.
Can I change something on my order after its been placed?
Yep, sure can. Just send an email with what you would like to change or add. If its an option with an added cost, we will send over a PayPal Payment Request (no account is needed), and you can pay by credit card. We will then make the change to your order, and reply back to confirm that your order has been changed. Just be sure to let us know of any changes you would like as soon as possible.
Can I cancel my order?
Yep, not a problem. Just let us know as soon as possible. Please be aware that if you request to cancel an order and it is close to your order's due date then we may need to deduct a fee from your refund for any parts that may have already been cut in preparation for your order.
Can I return an item?
Any of our in-stock products can be returned for a refund if returned within 14 days, in unused condition. Made to order sheaths, and items from The Depot are non-returnable.
Does my firesteel ship separately if I order it with a sheath?
If you order your firesteel with your sheath, it will ship when the sheath is completed. If you would like your firesteel shipped immediately, please order it separately.
Do you do kydex sheaths?
At this time we do not offer any kydex sheaths.
What are your shipping options?
We use the US Postal Service for all of our shipping. Small items have the option of shipping with USPS First Class, which is typically around $3 to $5. All of our sheaths ship via USPS Priority Mail, which is typically around $7 to $10 depending on weight. If you have a large order with multiple items, and the shipping seems unreasonably high please let us know and we will verify the shipping cost, and deduct any cost that is over the actual amount. If you would like UPS, please let us know and we can take care of you. Please note that there will be extra charges as UPS is nearly always more expensive.
Can I get a shipping estimate?
Yes, when you place an item in the shopping cart, you can get a shipping estimate on the shopping cart page by entering in your general location info (state, city, postal code).
Do you ship internationally?
Yes we do. We ship orders via USPS First Class International. You will find tracking information with the custom order has is provided when your order ships. Please note that this usually tracks the package up until it reaches customs in your home country. Often your country's delivery service will use this custom number to track your package within their system. You can try entering this number into their system to see if there is any tracking information from them after it has reached customs.
How long does the shipping take?
USPS Priority Mail can take up to 3 days. USPS First Class can take up to 7 days. USPS First Class International can take from 1 to 3 weeks, depending on the location.
Do you have a warranty?
Yes, we have a Lifetime Guarantee on all of our products. You can find more information HERE.
Can I use a different knife in the sheath it was intended for?
We do not recommend using other knives in our sheaths than what they were designed for. Our sheaths are form fitted to the specific knife, and using a different knife in the sheath will likely end up being a very poor fit, and potentially damage the sheath. Its not as simple as matching the length and width of a knife blade. Its like handgun holsters, you cant expect to get a functional fit if you shove a Glock into a 1911 holster. The warranty is null and void if the sheath is damaged by using another knife in the sheath. We will NOT entertain any "would this fit?" requests.
What thickness of leather do you use?
We use 9-10oz leather for our sheaths, and 7oz leather for pouches and firesteel loops.
Ok...what the hell do "oz's" mean?
Ounces are the unit of measure of thickness used in the leather industry. 1oz = 1/64 inch = .016 inch
Why is there a scar on my sheath?
Scars are common on every leather hide. These scars can be from anything from bug bites, to scratches from a cattle fence. We cut around the big obnoxious scars, but we will sometimes leave the small ones. Scars are part of leather's natural beauty, and it just reminds us that this came from a living breathing animal, and not off a fabric roll.
I lost a screw for my sheath, can I get a replacement?
Yep sure can, just let us know what you need and we'll send it out ASAP.
Will any of the interior mounting rivets or snaps scratch my knife?
Nope. Our rivets are compressed below the surface of the leather, keeping them from making contact with the knife. Our button snaps that are set in the interior of the sheath are counter-bored into the leather, and the snaps are specially coated with a rubber compound to keep them from scratching your knife.
Aren't leather sheaths heavy compared to kydex?
Not by any significant amount, they are very similar in weight. We are talking a difference in a few ounces.
Do you finish the inside of the sheath?
Yes we apply an oil and beeswax mixture to the interior of the sheath to keep it from harboring moisture which could potentially cause rust on your knife.
